The Pipeline: February 25, 2026
Hi there,
Welcome to this week's edition of The Pipeline. Here's what's flowing this week to keep you informed and entertained!
🔦 Fun Fact
The Romans built aqueducts that could transport water over 50 miles using nothing but gravity and a slight downward slope of about 1 foot per 1,000 feet. Some of these ancient plumbing marvels still stand today, and the engineering principles behind them — gravity-fed water distribution — remain fundamental to modern plumbing design.
😆 Laugh of the Day
Why did the plumber quit his job?
It was just too draining!
🔥 New DOE Commercial Water Heater Rules Take Effect October 2026
Mark your calendars: starting October 6, 2026, only high-efficiency condensing gas commercial water heaters can be manufactured or imported into the U.S. The new DOE standards require commercial gas storage water heaters to meet 95% thermal efficiency, while tankless models must hit 96%. This means a shift to condensing technology across the board. Non-condensing units still on shelves can be sold and installed until stock runs out — but once they're gone, they're gone.
⚠️ U.S. Faces 550,000-Plumber Shortage by 2027
The numbers are stark: the U.S. is expected to be short 550,000 plumbers by 2027, costing the national economy over $38 billion annually. With skilled tradespeople aging out and apprenticeship slots not keeping pace with demand, competition for qualified plumbers is driving wages up. The silver lining? Vocational enrollment rose 16% in 2023 to its highest level since 2018, and about 44,000 plumber openings are projected each year through 2034.
📱 PHCC: Smart Plumbing Moves from Optional to Standard in 2026
According to PHCC's 2026 Industry Outlook, smart plumbing systems, remote monitoring, and connected fixtures are no longer premium add-ons — they're becoming standard practice. The association remains "cautiously optimistic" about market conditions, with moderate growth expected despite inflation and tariff pressures. For plumbers, this means staying current on technology isn't just a nice-to-have; it's becoming essential to remain competitive in the field.
