A non-contact voltage pen is a useful first check, but it does not prove a circuit is dead. Insulation, shielding, low voltage, or a weak battery can hide an energized conductor, so absence-of-voltage testing still needs a properly rated contact tester checked on a known live source before and after the test.

The Department of Energy is reconsidering the 2024 efficiency rule for distribution transformers, including its 2029 compliance timeline and material requirements. Utilities favor preserving the standard with more schedule flexibility, while some manufacturers warn that amorphous-steel requirements could tighten supply and raise costs. For contractors already working around long transformer lead times, the final policy could affect equipment availability, specifications, and project schedules.
🚗 Washington EV Public Works Add a Training Check
Washington is taking comments on rules that implement added certification requirements for electricians installing or maintaining the electrical components of EV supply equipment on public works. The law points to EVITP or a similar nationally recognized program, with limited apprentice and existing-contract exceptions. Shops bidding public charging work should confirm who on the crew needs the credential and follow the rulemaking before comments close August 26.
🏢 Smart Buildings Need More Than a Few Data Drops
Modern smart buildings combine communications, security, power quality, backup power, HVAC, and redundant service paths into one coordinated system. The design choices change with occupancy, bandwidth, life-safety coverage, and the need to protect or separate tenant infrastructure. For electrical contractors, early coordination on rooms, pathways, cable support, power, cooling, and access control can prevent expensive rework later.
